Hi, I’m Val.
I have always been into music. I mean, extremely into music. But I am not a musician, I am a listener, a superfan. I do more than hear music, I feel it, with a sixth sense. I can predict with accuracy which artists will make, I can pick a hit single. I drive my friends crazy because I always comment on the music wherever we happen to be (“this music is too fast or too soft or not the right music for this place…” or “this is the wrong vibe for this retail store” or all during the Super Bowl commercials I moaned, “that was a terrible song choice for that ad – what were they thinking?!”) The wrong music has ruined many an outing for me. My baffled friends just stare at me and ask, “Why does the music matter so much to you?” But it is this critical ear that allows me to choose the best music for my Valslist music brand.
I made playlists long before they were called playlists. I was the music go-to person in junior high and throughout high school, college, and yes, motherhood. I grew up on classic rock, garage bands, disco, protest and folk songs. My music collection (which I’d organized and catalogued all summer long) rode on the front seat with me to college. As an adult, I have created the sound for school videos, sports teams, weddings and anniversary parties. Since the advent of modern catalysts like the internet, satellite radio, digital music, and streaming platforms, the breadth of my musical discovery has grown exponentially. I began sharing my playlists with friends and family, and they had a single message for me: turn your hobby into a business.
I’ve created this boutique music website to function as a music discovery service to the world – where I find the best cutting edge music, curate playlists, and deliver them to busy people who don’t have time to find it on their own but want great music in their lives. My taste is anything but Top 40. You won’t hear most of my selections on regular radio. I organize my playlists to flow effortlessly and set a mood. Each playlist is 15 tracks, and I surprise you with two vintage songs to make you smile (tracks #5 and 10.) I’ll throw in a world tune to expand your horizons. I’ve been told that my music is predictably good, not predictable music.
To me, music is the spice of life – it should be everywhere. When music is missing, life is flat. The best music moves you, causes a visceral effect in you. That’s the music I choose. That’s the music I bring to Valslist. No matter who you are, whether you’re a basic fan or a superfan, I invite you to discover Valslist. And I will enjoy bringing to you that rare feeling of hearing the right song.
